What are some “in” slang words ?

As a person who is Mexican our Spanish has SOOOO much slang it’s insane, English has slang too. Ive been learning Chinese for 2 months and I already know slang by just interacting with the language. BUTT I’ve been learning Japanese for 7 months and idk any slang .. is it just not common? I have language exchange partners in both Chinese and Japanese and our conversations are fun but no slang(for Japanese)? Or maybe I’m missing it.

Japanese speakers what are some “in” slang words right now ? Stuff you say often with friends etc I don’t just mean insults I just mean regular slang words!

  1. めっちゃ可愛い (very cute)

    めっちゃ is slang

    イケメン slang for handsome

There are also YouTube videos where you just type in search Japanese slang and learn slang words from natives.

  2. ちーっす is a slangy was of saying こんにちは

changing -oi or -ai to -ee is something you’ll hear a lot in anime, games, manga, etc, eg すげー instead of すごい or やべー instead of やばい. Speaking of やばい, that’s already a pretty slangy word too. The -ee ending sounds kind of masculine.

Another would be っす instead of です or ます, like you might hear 何っすか? instead of 何ですか?

マジ卍=まじまんじ used to be kind of popular with teen girls

  3. I don’t think it’s productive to learn slang from here. People will provide outdated or irrelevant slang. Also many of the examples here like “すげー” have been so common for so long I wouldn’t think of them as “slang” any more than I think of the English word “cool” as “slang”.

Slang is best learned from actually talking to friends and hearing what’s currently being used among the group you want to talk with in my opinion
