Might be a dumb question, but how do you check in for a reservation at a restaurant?

US-based here. Heading to Japan at the end of the month and want to make sure I’m respectful of everyone there, especially when eating at restaurants.

I’ve made reservations at some popular restaurants and was curious if there’s an unspoken rule for checking in for reservations.

Specifically, let’s say a restaurant opens at 11AM, and my reservation is exactly at 11AM, but there’s been a line out the door since 10AM. Can I cut the line and check-in with the host as soon as they open their doors? Do I wait in line like everyone else or do I wait in line for them to call out names of those who have reservations? Do restaurants typically have a separate line for reservation check-ins?

Any advice would be much appreciated!
