Smartphones for children

Just wanted to gather information about giving kids smartphones in the context of public school in Japan.

I understand that there will be some variance between districts on how the schools treat them, and I am on top of that (we’ve gotten some letters about it as the kids are starting to get them).

I am talking more about everyone’s thoughts as parents:

* What rules do you lay out?
* What features do you disable/enable?
* What level of monitoring do you perform? (Especially wondering about 24/7 GPS sharing etc.)

I’ve heard quite a few opinions from our neighbors and my wife’s mamatomos, but I figured asking here might give me some new perspectives/ideas/pitfalls to watch out for etc.

Any and all opinions and anecdotes are welcome! Thanks!

Edit: 2 boys, 11 and 7. Our oldest is in 6th year currently.
