Being approached in Tokyo

Yesterday, for the first time since I’ve arrived in Japan, a Japanese person approached me. I was walking by myself around Shinjuku @ 1pm when this good-looking young man, wearing a suit, carrying his suitcase stopped me and asked if he could “hang out with me” because he thought I was “so cute”. I was wearing a mask and sunglasses, so he couldn’t see much of my face, which made me suspicious of his comment.

Was that some kind of scam? Any tactics I should be aware of as a girl in her early 20s in Tokyo?

edit: someone pointed out that it might be insightful to mention I am a Nikkei, so I don’t think I look like a foreigner right away.
