  1. Would it be fair to say this is the trade-off when your country chooses measures for national security (ex. The strict borders) that stifle your own economy? (0 snark here, honestly wondering)

  2. Awww… Their grandparents will have to send more money, or lose the “love” of a grandchild.

  3. It’s just a matter of perspective. The yen appears weak compared to the past, but a dollar could be 154 yen a year from now. In that case, the yen is comparatively strong.

  4. Reminds me of when Abe took over and set about weakening the yen. Before, the exchange rate was around 100円 to €1. Afterwards it went from around 120円 to €1. All within a few weeks.

  5. And Im gonna have to transfer a lot of money from yen to dollars here in a month or so.

    Gotta love it.

  6. Same for Canada (Vancouver). I get that Japanese students want to study English but holy sh*t they’re getting ripped off via a) school fees b) rent prices c) exchange rate d) minimum wage jobs. Not worth it at all.

  7. many japanese/korean students engage in prostitution to fund their “studies” and i think its going to “push” them more into that direction. its a sad situation.

  8. I lived in Japan 25 years ago. I was paying ¥160 to the dollar. That really sucked trying to pay down my credit cards. It would have been fun to be a tourist though!

  9. Open your borders and I’ll come spend a lot of US dollars in your economy and strengthen the yen a tiny bit.
