Obtain immigration status for newborn child

Hi all,

I have a question regarding obtaining immigration status for my newborn. I will be going to the immigration office to apply for his dependent status within 30 days of birth. He will become my husband’s dependent (New Zealander).

My questions is regarding obtaining his Australian citizenship.

When applying for Japanese residency status, there is a form I need to fill in which asks for when I will apply for his passport. I believe there is no time limit to apply for Australian citizenship so I would like to its application until things are more normal (say within 1 year after birth). Let me know if I am wrong about that.

Will the immigration department approve his dependent application if I intend to apply for his passport 3 year after birth? Is there a preferred timeline (e.g. within 3 months/6 months etc)? I have no plans to travel, I would like to wait until necessary before getting one.

Thank you.

Updated for more details.
