  1. Yum!! On top of hot rice is my fave. It’s not bad in fried rice but adding natto to a hot pan will make your whole house smell like natto 😅

  2. I love natto!

My mother-in-law for breakfast will mix it with a raw egg and some ground up yamaimo, its a triple decker of slimey but freaking great!

Natto fried rice is good, also mix even parts natto and kimchi let it sit about a day in the fridge then go to town on it. Also i once made natto stuff fried aburaage pockets that my wife (shes native japanese) LOVED!

  3. It looks great! I also get the same brand as that very often.

Onsen egg and kimchi is a good combo. On rice, or on cold tofu.

As a topping for somen or soba is also great.

I’m personally not a fan, but Korean spicy ramen with natto seems pretty popular.

Natto spaghetti has a lot of variation in recipes but the main ingredients are melted butter, nori, beaten natto, extra soy sauce to taste mixed in to just cooked pasta. Green onion, okra, tomato and bonito flakes are a pretty great addition.

I’ve also seen it as a Japanese curry topping but again, personally not a fan.

  4. I’ve almost always had it the ‘classic’ way as pictured. Every once in a while I’ll take the bowl and use roasted pieces of seaweed to scoop some out of the bowl, or add some roasted seaweed flakes on it.

Once had it in sushi at a restaurant, which was ok but it didn’t have green onions; without them it seems incomplete lol. I believe I’ve seen them offered in onigiri/rice balls and once as a optional add on for ramen, which I don’t think I’d care for, even though I love natto.

  5. Natto omelets are really good! Also natto mixed with maguro is very tasty.

  6. I like it on fresh hot white rice with a raw egg and the natto mixed in. Add some Bonito flake and soy sauce for a little more saltiness and unami. It’s delicious.

  7. It’s good on buttered toast. Bonus: spread some miso on there before the natto too.

Yes, I know that isn’t authentic Japanese. But I first learned of the concept from a 無料 freebie supermarket recipe booklet from a grocery store here in Japan, so that tells you it’s at least something Japanese people might try.

It’s kind of like the popular fusion cuisine dish where you put natto on spaghetti.

  8. Try the one with shiso in it. It’s been my fave for a solid 8 years. Hahaha

  9. green onion, raw egg, kimchi, raw tuna, etc. all works pretty well with it.

A friend of mine loves adding kewpie (mayo) to hers, but I haven’t tried it.

  10. I live natto mixed with warm sushi rice. I also mix in chopped carrots, cucumber, and avocado. And top it with the included soy packet, seasme oil, and black sesame seeds! It’s a hearty breakfast with a nice veggie bonus!

  11. Natto fried rice. Natto kimchi friend rice, put natto on top of silken tofu, handrolls with natto (wrap the natto in dried roasted seaweed), natto kimbap. So many delicious ways to enjoy natto 🙂

  12. Looks like everyone else has already covered the major suggestions, so I’ll go with a smaller one.

Most packs of natto will come with a little package of karashi mustard to go along with it. To that end, I’ve found natto works really well with other kinds of strong, spicy mustard as well. The salty/savory flavor natto has is great to pair with a really spicy, tart grain mustard. It’s great on toast!

  13. Adding different things to the natto makes it more interesting!
I always add raw egg on there, occasionally add aojiso to add some extra flavor 🙂

  14. In Hawaii there is a shop near me that has a really good tuna/ natto poke bowl. I also enjoy it mixed into miso soup.

  15. Honestly. On rice w/green onion is perfect and goes with basically anything on the side. I also like to mix in a raw quail egg with the natto, it really elevates it.

But, I got into natto by buying spicy natto rolls at the convenience stores in Japan not realizing what it was. I’d love to replicate that sometime, but it’s been like 15 years

  16. Same as you have there but with a soft scrambled egg between the rice and natto

  17. Nattou’s texture made me want to vomite everywhere. I feel like I am missing apart of the culture because I can’t stand it haha

  18. Topping for udon noodle! Boil, drain, and chill your udon noodle, then add natto + kimchi on top. It’s REALLY good.

  19. I like to cook it with tomato and egg and serve over rice for a bowl of comfort goodness

  20. Natto is one of my go to lunches

If you live in Japan: mix your raw egg with your natto and some shoyu.

Pour on high quality silken Tofu.

    That’s it!
