Additives in food and medicine

This is a bit of a strange one but I noticed from another thread someone complaining that many (not all) painkillers contain caffeine which for westerners is particularly odd.

Additionally at home we cook a lot of Japanese food from scratch and notice quite a lot of readymade packet foods contain preservatives and flavor enhancers such as Flavor Enhancer 621 (Monosodium Glutamate – MSG) and flavor Enhancer 635 (Disodium 5′-ribonucleotides).

Can anyone advise whether these additives can easily be avoided particularly when shopping in kombini?

I’d also be interested to know of any other stranging gradients westerners have discovered in foods and medicines for example that would seem unusual.
