Is using a gohei in a costume offensive?

Hi y’all, I’m not quite sure if this is the place to post this, but I figured I’d try!

I’m working on a cosplay for the character Yae Miko from Genshin Impact. The character uses a gohei (御幣) during gameplay and I wanted to make a prop of it for my cosplay. I haven’t been able to much, if anything, on whether this is in some way offensive or uncouth. I’m unfamiliar with Shinto religion and want to make sure I’m not crossing any lines.

Thank you for reading! If you have thoughts or resources to share, please do!

  1. People are easily offended by anything these days. If you cosplay as a military character, vets may be offended because you’re wearing uniform without experiencing Vietnam, Iraq, or Afghanistan. If you cosplay as a nun character with a cross, a christian person may be triggered. Whatever you do, you will cross *someone*’s lines.

  2. Japanese people literally invented cosplay, they’re not going to get offended by something like that

  3. I’m no expert, but I haven’t found anything suggesting it would be offensive/sacrilegious if you make one for cosplay–though I believe if you’re making one for genuine purification purposes, there are a lot more strict rules (washing your hands/self thoroughly, using specific paper, etc)

Good luck on pulling her! (I’m waiting for Raiden Shogun myself!)
