JR ticket gate mystery

I took a train (Tobu-Isesaki line) from Tatebayashi to Kuki and changed to the Shonan Shinjuku line to get to Shinjuku. The weird thing is I exited the station at Kuki and then walked to the Shonan Shinjuku platform and did not have to pass a ticket gate or turnstile… got into the train and paid the fare adjustment at Shinjuku, so all good in the end. But what exactly happened? The same thing happened a long time ago at Yokohama station where I exited some JR line and then took one of the hyphenated lines with red letters (I don’t remember clearly) to Shinjuku and had to pay a fare adjustment to get out of Shinjuku. Anyone know what I may be doing wrong… and how I can get onto a platform without passing through a turnstile? Thanks.
