Saw this in a local oriental market $32/lb, good for making sushi?

I can defrost this and use it to make sushi/sashimi? Just wanted to ask and confirm – I’m thinking yes?

  1. That seems like a lot and I doubt it’s bluefin. Yellowfin would be my guess – those blocks are about $15/pound where I live. They’re also saturated with Carbon Monoxide to make the color more attractive – if you saw the color of the tuna when it went into the machine, you definitely wouldn’t buy it.

  2. I’m going to honest. I personally would defrost that sucker and eat it with soy sauce.

Even if it was bad for me…

  3. I actually think this is fine to eat.

Indonesia DOES have bluefin tuna (I think they call it southern bluefin). It’s obviously not at the level of Japanese hon maguro or Spanish bluefin but that’s why it’s only $32/lb (that is cheap…)

I would be very surprised if it was mislabeled but obviously seafood can be the Wild West. There are rules and regs on imports.

If you defrost make sure to wrap in paper towel and back into fridge if you don’t finish it. It will oxidize and turn brown quickly.
