Roadside traps Omigi area

I went for a hike today around the omigi area and saw multiple of these traps made out of PVC. Does anyone know something about these?

What are they trying to catch and why?

  1. Mongoose traps, they are not native to Okinawa. They were introduced to help control the snake (mainly Habu) population, but these cute little guys actually are usually not awake when Habu are and tend to think that the native bird population is much easier to hunt or eat the eggs of than a huge poisonous snake with big sharp fangs. Smart mongoose, dumb people for first setting them free.

  2. When I first saw them I thought they were a geocache. I opened one up and got really nasty and old food on my hands lol.
