Help please with Tokyo hotel decision? Exhausted with research. Where should we stay in Tokyo? Family of four. Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akasaka?

My kids talked me into a last minute decision to go to Japan for 8 days. I’ve been researching for a couple of days, more than 8 hours. I didn’t expect to be so overwhelmed by figuring out Tokyo, let alone the rest of the trip! Leaning towards 3.5 days in Tokyo, then stop at Mt Fuji, then 3-4 days in Kyoto. So much still to plan and learn! Reddit has been great.

The crazy thing is Tokyo has thousands of hotels. It’s been difficult to figure out what the best options are. I’ve been on booking, agoda, priceline, Expedia, Google etc.

I know the main thing is to stay near a metro, preferably the Yamanote line. We want to spend time in the main places and don’t mind using public transportation. I have a 10 and 13 year old, so they are excited to explore.

Shinjuku seems to have more hotels. Then I read that the metro is insanely busy, and there’s a red light district, so now I’m thinking maybe I should stay elsewhere.

Was thinking Shibuya but almost no availability. Our budget is up to $400 a night for all four of us. I noticed that most hotels or apartments don’t accommodate more than 2 people. That’s the other issue, trying to understand how the rooms are commonly laid out. So we probably need two rooms.

At this point I’m ready to just ask the reddit panel where I should stay.

The places I’ve narrowed down to include
– apartment near Kudanshita station – $1000-1500.
– the Godzilla hotel gracery but the beds seem really small for two people – $1500-1800
– APA Hotel & Resort Nishishinjuku-Gochome-Eki – says it’s a double bed but pic and description says it’s very small. We’re not picky but after a long day of walking we just want to have a good night sleep. -$1200
– Daiwa Roynet Hotel Nishi-Shinjuku – west Shinjuku, seems like a promising hotel, I like they actually show the bed and size (61″). $1200.
– Mimaru Tokyo Shinjuku west – pricier at $2100 for four nights, but we can all be in the same room, and I read good things about this chain.

Another option is Airbnb. Open to that. I don’t want to be too cheap because this is a bucket list trip for us. Willing to spend a reasonable amount, not extravagant, as we will be out most of the time. Location, convenience, safety, good experience of Tokyo are what we’re looking for.

Thanks!
