It feels like it’s been rainy season for the past five months here in the Osaka area. Last year did not seem this intense with the grey skies and rain. Is this normal?
I feel like this year has more grey skies than last few years by a noticeable amount. I think next year will be better. Spring used to be way more sunnier / less grey.
The only thing abnormal is it’s gotten several degrees hotter than normal (we had several days in the low 20’s in March, and were almost 30 in April). Other than that this is pretty normal. Makes me glad I’m no longer capable of riding a motorcycle to work every day (ie i arrive at work dry and don’t have to keep a dry pair of shoes/socks/cloths at work)…
BUT – feel free to bitch about the weather. It’s one of those universal things we all enjoy bitching about. Like how the fuck do people still not know how to drive in the fucking rain… This is as bad as Seattle was…
All I know is once this rain period is gone it’s gonna be bloody freaking hot…
I mean last year was way too hot for way too long
Not sure since this would be my first Spring and Summer in Osaka since moving from Wakayama, I would have assumed that the weather would be similar due to distance. BUT we are in the middle of May, and it is still mostly under 20s and last night being around 9-11 degrees, is this normal? In Wakayama, around April, it would start getting scorching hot.
Frequent typhoons keep throwing shit our way. Hence the random showers and wind. You can never trust the weather reports and better always carry a foldable umbrella in your bag. I have 3 weather apps and all three show different weather. I don’t even remember having a full sunny week in Osaka. The combo always gets interrupted with rain after 2-3 days. Waterproof spray for shoes doesn’t help that much. A simple shoe dryer was one of the best purchases I’ve made after moving to Kansai.
Yeah it’s been cloudier and rainier than usual. Also the wild changes in air pressure are throwing me off big time. Feels like tsuyu already.
Rainy season hasn’t started yet. They’re predicting a late June start bringing abnormally high temperatures until then, with the actual rainy season going well into July.
Yep, thats global warming. Expect more rain in the future. What throws me off is the sudden temperature changes. Went to work in a tshirt, during lunch it rained and there was a huge temp drop. Now i bring a vest everyday just in case.
It has been pretty good actually. Maybe you’ve feeling down.
Do you prefer grey skies with rain, or scorching heat with 100% humidity? 🙂
I was complaining about the same thing yesterday. It’s the same here in Kanto. Most days of the week it’s raining and it’s not even tsuyu yet. Can’t enjoy a goddamn weekend without getting your boots wet. Feels good when it’s sunny though.
From my Japanese friends they do agree that the last 5 or so months have been way more rainy and cloudy than usual in Osaka, I don’t mind it but I have been caught out with an umbrella too many times already. I really should invest into a foldable umbrella.
>It feels like it’s been rainy season for the past five months
yes
> Is this normal?
no…
I bike to work daily here in Kyushu, have done for twelve years, and this was hands down the rainiest winter into Spring I remember.
Fun fact: technically this is a rainy season. It’s called Takenoko Tsuyu. Rainy season for bamboo shoots lol.
I miss May used to be the nicest month of the year. I’m sensing the rainy season approaching already.
Was like this last year
I don’t feel like the rain is constant. It’s more like regular, which I think is healthy. Last year felt way too dry, couldn’t have been good for water reserves, and it’s probably what drove the prices of some fruits and vegetables through the roof beginning in Oct/Nov (¥300 for 1 tomato is NOT a seasonal issue!)
The best thing about rain once a week is the smell as the rain starts. Is that what is called “musk”? I just love it.
Has it been that bad in Osaka? Been pretty nice here in Kyushu. Maybe 1 rainy day per week. Not a cloud in the sky today, although strangely I can see the moon.
I’d prefer this more than the inevitable heatwave
I’ve been loving this cooler May.
Last May felt like it got warm right away and just stayed there while this year has felt more gradual?
Every year gets worse
It’s not even the start of rainy season to my understanding, but considering the weird weather worldwide recently, I wouldn’t be surprised if it stayed awful.
The frigging wind gusts made even a blue sky day almost miserable.
Idk about Osaka. But damn the weather in Tokyo has been great.
The only sad part is how my house is the best example of how an oven works during the latter half of the day when the sun is on my balcony. But the clody sky lately saved me. And even with it, the weather outside was still nice.
Too bad it is getting more and more sunny.
Really? I’m in Osaka city and there have been hardly any days witn substantial rain. I’ve only carried my big (as in non-folding) umbrella once. There have been cloudy days, which is great as it hasn’t been too hot yet (that might change this coming weekend though…)
Let it continue. My Aircon hasn’t been on since February and I’m happy to save the energy and not be a sweaty mess every time I leave my apartment.
I’m coming to Osaka in a couple of days, should I bring a light coat with me or will a hoodie be enough? I’ve never been there before and I’m freaking oit over what to pack.
