I’m planning to buy a Kansai-Hiroshima pass to visit the area between Kyoto and Hiroshima. On the last of the five pass days I’m planning to leave Kobe for Tokyo (not yet 100% sure, but the stop will be anyway out of Kansai), how does the ticket works in that case? Should I book only the trip from Osaka to Tokyo (the pass only cover the express train between Osaka and Kyoto, it doesn’t make sense to change train just for that stretch) and consider the rest covered by the Kansai-Hiroshima pass? How does that normally work?

You go to the ticket office, show your pass and ask for a ticket from Kobe (Shin-Kobe) to Tokyo. They will charge you for the ticket from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo.
