How much of written language is in kanji?

I’m still starting to learn the language, still halfway through katakana and just finished hiragana.

Kanji already seems like a whole other monster to tackle and I was wondering how much they’re used in comparison to hiragana. I’m asking because I want to start already trying to engaje with japanese texts and subtitles, but I’m not sure if I’ll be able to if most is in kanji.

So, is kanji like a major part of phrases? Should I wait until I have actually learned kanji before going after actual japanese texts?
