IT job without degree

A bit of my background:

-i’m a 26 y.o male already live and stay in japan.

-my japanese level is around N3 ( never took a test but i can read some N3 level japanese ).

-never finished my degree.

-just starting my online bootcamp.

My question is:

-Is it possible to get an IT job without degree in japan?

-am i too old for requirement age?

*I have high expectation because i heard from my friends that IT field don’t require degree, but i’m not sure about it. Even i would start from shittiest company in the country just to build my experience.

Edit: forgot to mention my visa is already PR.

Thanks!

  1. At the end of the day, if you can pass coding assessments, you can get hired in IT without a degree in Computer Science.

  2. Do you have like ~10 years of experience of actually doing something useful and related to IT that you can show off? Or did you just decide to pivot from English Teaching into IT and signed up for a bootcamp with zero prior experience? In the latter case the answers are:

    – No

    – Not too old

Anyway, your problem will be getting a visa, even if a “shitty company” sponsors you, you still need to have a degree in order to fulfill the immigration requirement. It could be a degree in asian studies, or WHATEVER, but without one, unless you have an EXTREMELY good portfolio and years and years of practice/skills that you can demonstrate over hiring someone local, forget it.

If you’re married/PR/whatever and have no visa issues, then it still boils down to your skills. If you’re willing to make less than an English teacher, by all means. Plenty of companies hire “graduates” expecting them to know nothing.

  3. For just getting a job it’s possible I don’t think immediately but in time. If this isn’t about you getting a work visa then employment is doable after you get some skills.

  4. If you’re PR, then there is no reason why you can’t get a job in IT without a degree.

The related degree and/or related experience is only required for immigration purposes, for those who require a work visa.

PRs have no working restriction thus to get an IT job, you just need to apply, and impress the employer enough for them to want to hire you.

  5. There are good company that hire new grads expecting them to know nothing.

Your attitude towards learning by yourself will be more valuable.

My advice is to look for english speaking companies, they are more open and have exposure to new technology.

If you don’t have any clue, try talking to recruiters. They’re more than happy to help you as they earn commission on you

Probably a good idea to avoid banks as they run on way too old tech and there are people who’ve stayed there for 30 years doing nothing but writing csv you’d probably won’t learn much from them.

Choose japanese speaking company wisely, make sure they are willing to migrate to new technology like clouds.

    Avoid haken/dispatch companies too.

  6. You should be OK. Work on your japanese a bit though. Dont get obsessed with japanese, but a bit more level will help you a lot also.

Definitely you are on the age to do what you are asking. Good luck with it.

  7. In opinion some of the IT consulting Agency hired an inexperience IT support Job as long as they speak Japanese well and beside your an PR there’s no worrying to find an IT job.best wishes for your Job Journey.

  8. Get your N2.

Normally I wouldn’t suggest that since I’d recommend avoiding Japanese companies entirely and language wouldn’t be an issue, but I think it may be exceedingly difficult to get hired at an English environment foreign company with nothing but a bootcamp certificate. If you are N2 though there are serious diminishing returns on language ability and hard tech skills will scale much much much further for your career.

  9. I can’t answer your questions, but just want to wish you luck. I’m also learning now, have N2 certificate and a spouse visa. If I ever want another baby, it’s up to me to get more money to be able to make it. So I’m doing my best 🙂

    You’re going to be great!

  10. You don’t have any work restrictions if you have 永住権 because you don’t actually have a visa anymore. You would need a college degree to get a visa to work in that field if you didn’t have permanent residency but that doesn’t apply to you now. You can do any kind of work you want or just stay home and let your SO take care of you if that’s what you want. It’s up to the individual employers whether they’re willing to hire you or not.

  11. It’ll be tough but you can get it for sure. Provided you keep trying and upskilling.

  12. same background as you, but i was 28yr, i did a couple of small games and then got an interview, i ended up to gget hired at the first interview, so my advice is.. create something, this will help you to say ” hey i can code, the proof is here”
