  1. Some of the best sushi I’ve had was at a convenience store in Japan. That being said , in the US, the quality of the grocery store probably will reflect the quality of the sushi.

  2. Ask them to make you a fresh roll, and try to avoid the ones that have been sitting in the cooler

  3. I like grocery store sushi. Definitely hits the spot. Anything with spicy tuna.

  4. i think you need to buy it at the right time, with respects towards when the sushi is made. if they have an in house chef for it, then it’s probably going to be alright, but it varies widely from store to store. there are definitely services which deliver premade sushi to stores, and those are usually really bad in my experience, since they will make it look like a real roll but when you taste it, it’s basically just regular white rice with no sushi vinegar, a stick of fake crab, and some celery with too many cheap crispy onions on top.

  5. If its not from a actual sushi cart made fresh in store daily avoid that shit like the plauge. The ones kept next to the seafood salad and sandwiches are absolute crap.

  6. I shamelessly grab sushi from Kroger’s whenever SO and I hit it up. (Well, pre-pregnancy) it’s cheap, they have a decent amount in the boxes, and they usually have varieties that I like. I like that the boxes feature different flavors and I like that I don’t have to wait on them;;;

Meijers sushi is always a disappointment to me for some reason, though, and I refuse to get any from Walmart- I just can’t bring myself to trust it.

  7. Whole Foods and New Seasons in the PNW are really good. Much better than Kroger or Safeway.

  8. The sushi guys at the stores near me are so good and always excited when you ask them to make you something special/custom.

  9. Two of my close friends used to work at Whole Foods and would bring me the sushi no one bought after their shift a few nights a week. I would put it in the fridge and we would drink some beers, maybe smoke a little weed and hang out. Then usually at like 1-2am I would remember the sushi and raid the fridge then scarf down the left over supermarket sushi. It was never that great quality but in a situation like that it really hit the spot. Now days my palate has evolved quite a bit when it comes to sushi so I avoid the supermarket stuff but I get a nostalgic craving every once in a while and pick some up, put it in the fridge, have a few drinks and eat it late at night before hitting the sack. It reminds me of those good times I had with my buddies.

  10. Publix by me has a guy making the rolls right in front of you and they do nigiri and a couple sides as well. If he’s there when you pick it up he always says thank you too. You can ask for a roll but it’s easier to order it online if you want that because he has a hard time getting it right in person lol.

  11. Grocery store sushi around me is more expensive than the restaurants and significantly lower quality.

  12. The price of sushi at my local stores is equal or sometimes more than going to a sushi place. So I never bother with it.

  13. I live near a Raley’s, and I genuinely would prefer their sushi to a lot of restaurants

  14. There’s a H-Mart I go to that has several tiny independent stores inside, one of them being a sushi place. I lost count of how many times I bought sushi from that place.

  15. I work at HT, we have someone from outside make the suishi. Personally I’ve always liked it, it’s good

  16. It’s not bad. I just have them make it fresh because I don’t like the wasabi flavor unless it’s mixed with soy sauce and even then I use very little. Love the spice hate the flavor

  17. Oh yes, the crunchy rolls are delicious 😋 I always get them on the occasion that I am there.

  18. Big Y has most basic rolls for $5 on Wednesdays so I stay fucking that shit up

  19. My local Kroger has someone who handmakes sushi and puts it out to purchase, really delicious. It’s a college town so I understand why it’s there.

  20. I can’t bring myself to order a plain California roll at a restaurant, but when the craving hits, grocery store sushi is where I go.

  21. I’m a health inspector for a major city and when people ask me where the cleanest place to get sushi is I tell them the grocery store
