GABA Part Time Employee

Hello everyone! I would just like to ask how GABA would be considerate with regards to choosing your desired work days and what their contract is like. I’m currently an ALT for a dispatch company and would like to work just to get some extra cash.

Thank you!

  1. You get to decide your own schedule. I know many ALTs that only work one day at gaba for extra money

Edit: i thought more information would be helpful. In general, GABA doesnt care how little or much you work. Just as long as the location you’re choosing isn’t all filled with instructors.

  2. Seriously, if you’re going to get part-time work above and beyond being an ALT, if you’re at all decent, just teach people directly. Plenty of websites for looking for private students, in which case you make your own schedule – and wage.

  3. You do get to choose your own schedule, but you’re not getting paid for unbooked lessons. The contract is gyomu itaku (independent contractor).

  4. Don’t they pay like 1,500 yen for a 40-minute lesson?
You’d have to sit there for at least 7 hours just to make 10,000 yen.

    I’d rather just stay home.

  5. I worked at GABA for 6 months. I’d say it can be a decent part-time job if you get the lessons as you can choose your own hours. Beware though, there are 2 required 9 hour unpaid training days and then two more within 3 and 5 months of you joining, however, they sort you 5,000yenfor those which, isn’t great, but better than nothing as they never pay your transport.

GABA can be hit and miss as well. Sometimes you can get all your bookings filled, have none or worse than that have your first and last lesson booked leaving a nasty 3 hour unpaid gap in between.

My advice to you is this. If you can swallow the two 9 hour unpaid training days then it could well be an avenue for some extra yennies. But, it probably won’t be worth it if the school is not either close to your home or somewhere you can burn some time like a gym or nice onsen.

Another user commented about getting private clients. Easier said than done but I’m sure if you make some nice business cards to hand out to people you meet and make a profile on websites like hello sensei you might have some success.

    Good luck mate.

  6. Like other people said, GABA will let you pick your hours. They are pretty flexible about this, however they do reserve the right to “disapprove” of a schedule you send them, thereby pretty much controlling your hours. Does not happen often, though.

As for pay, they have a grade system, but most people make JPY 1500/hr. If you teach classes at peak times, GABA will pay you a greater per hour rate.
