The chore of emptying this:
Is absolutely disgusting, especially since I usually get rid of any big food particles before washing any dishes. Can I just forego using it entirely and have only the [rubber mouth thing](https://shopping.c.yimg.jp/lib/colorfulbox/391102.jpg) so that any tiny food bits go directly down the drain/into the pipes?

It usually doesn’t go into the pipes. Take a look and see if you have a drain pool like most sinks seem to. That bottom is gonna fill up and you’ll have to empty it.
Buy the nets for the drain if you really want.
oh, yeah – the nets are great. That is why there is probably 5 different types in the market.
Wild idea, but how about scraping your plates into the bin? If not, be prepared to unclog drains (spoiler: it’ll be even more disgusting than the drain catcher).
IÂ replaced it with a stainless steel net holder from Amazon, and then got some nets from the 100 yen shop. It’s much less disgusting now.
Cleaning out the pipe when it’s clogged with mons worth of rotten particles would be even worse. Just clean the basket every time you wash dishes. It shouldn’t be disgusting at that point and takes 15 seconds.
If you empty and rinse it every day it should not be disgusting. Get into the habit of doing this regularly in shower and sinks, and you should avoid any disgusting experiences.Â
Removing will lead to blockages and problems further down the pipe that are harder to clean.Â
