Be Careful about Electric Bill Phishing Scam via SMS

I’m sure many are quite aware of the “you missed your delivery, click on this link to reschedule” phishing scam that often gets sent to our phones.

That said, I received a new one from a number pretending to be TEPCO which warned my electricity would soon be cut for missing last month’s payment, and to click on a link to complete the payment.

As usual, indication of phishing scam:

– suspicious-looking url link that does not have company name in the domain. Customer number will also be way too short (3 digits).
– They misspelled TEPCO as ‘TECPO’
– You won’t get your power cut off for 1 month late payment, typically they’ll chase a few months before going to that stage. Also, always good to have a good system to keep track of your bills so that you immediately know if their claim sounds legitimate or not.
– Even if you are actually late, go directly on their website / call their official phone number yourself to resolve this rather than clicking on any links sent to you.

Stay vigilant and safe!
