High Japanese level required for mortgage?

I am a foreigner on a spousal visa and have been living in Tokyo for 3 years. I recently applied to smbc for a mortgage jointly with my Japanese spouse. After filling out the online intake form, I was contacted by someone from the bank. I told them my Japanese isn’t that great (I’m N2) and asked them to call back when my wife was with me. The bank person called back and asked if I could read and write Japanese, to which I said yes but it was difficult. She then said that the mortgage contract was in Japanese, and that since I couldn’t read it without assistance I couldn’t get a mortgage. I was pretty surprised by this and didn’t really try to push my case.

Has anyone else had this experience? Did I just say the wrong thing? Thank you in advance.
