I live in Gojo and I’m regularly woken up in the dead of night by the sounds of cars revving and speeding off. It doesn’t bother me that much as I’m pretty far off from the source and I only really notice it if I leave the window open, but I’m genuinely so curious too see if anyone else has heard this or knows more? Like where tf are they doing this and like what’s the point??? Having a little race when the cops are all in bed? It’s going on like clockwork every night!
Would be reassuring just to know that I’m not losing my mind!
edit: found some other people discussing it:

Let me know if anyone finds out so I can make sure to avoid it… uh for science.
I think you mean the bosozoku (暴走族).
I noticed the noise at night when I visited Kyoto many years ago as a traveler.
The Kyoto Fu even enacted an ordinance to restrict this behavior:
「京都府暴走族等の追放の促進に関する条例」

Those arent cars, those are bikes, and they are a “gang”.
Bosozokus that it existed in the past in huge numbers and recently they are on the hype again, partially because an anime made them on the spot again.
They come with the good weather, like bugs. When there is way too hot or way to cold they disappear for a while.
It is a mistery to me why police don’t try to fine them, it is not like they cant find them cos they repeat the route every weekend…,when they are so sensible with loud sounds, in Kyoto specially. But I guess that if the young people is doing that at least are not stealing, doing drugs or anything 😅
Now it has a name.
Top things annoying me living in Kyoto:
1 – overcrowded tourists
2 – bosozoku banbanbanpanban at my window 🪟 (higashiyama area)
3 – …
