I’m in the process of converting my COE into a visa. I’m not able to get an appointment at my local consulate until after I’m already supposed to be in Japan so I need to apply by mail. The embassy says on their website almost as a foot note that if applying by mail you can send a copy of the COE instead of the original, but everything else I’ve heard says that you must send the original. Can anyone confirm by first hand experience which is correct?
Obviously not risking the original in the mail is preferable but I don’t want to apply and get rejected on the basis of not sending the original

I had to mail the original. I sent via fedex so it could be tracked.
