Visa application: Intended length of stay in Japan – Advice please

Hi All,

My COE (highly skilled professional version) says I can stay for 5 years.

My job contract has a duration of 3 years.

Question 1: Can I put 5 years on the Visa application, to be in line with COE, but longer than the contract duration?

Question 2: Of course, I will want to take overseas holidays from Japan during those 3 – 5 years. Assuming that putting 5 years on the Visa wont make that a problem later on. Can someone confirm?

Thank you very much for your experience.

Go for it. One thing to keep in mind though is that HSFP is employer dependent, so if you change companies you’ll need to request a change of status.

The two are not related. Except for some very specific statuses of residence you are allowed to travel internationally. At the airport when leaving for your holiday you’ll be able to apply for (and get pretty much automatically) a special re-entry permit that is good for up to one year (or until your status of residence expires, whichever comes first).
