Cost of living in Tokyo: Are 190.000~210.000 yen sufficient to live in Tokyo without struggling to make ends meet?

Hey everyone,

Just to preface this, I have lived in Tokyo before, however I cannot make my mind up on this and thus I just wanted to ask a few more people that might have come accross this more often than I have.

I am looking to move to Tokyo from February 2025 onwards for a six month internship. I have received multiple offers already, however all of these offers so far are unpaid. Whilst I do not necessarily have an issue with unpaid internships, I am worried as I will be living quite far outside of my current location (austria).

Through various ways of funding, I am able to cough up approx. €1.300 per month freely disposable funding during my time in Japan, translating to, depending on the exchange rate, anything between 180.000 and 220.000 yen per month.

Now for the big question: Is this amount of money enough to live in Tokyo comfortably (comfortably here means having a roof over my head, food on the table, the ability to go to and from work and maybe €100 – €200 per month left over to enjoy life a bit (experiences, maybe a night out).

Thank you so much for responding in advance!! 🙂
