Advice on potential pathways to work in Japan when failing the JET Programme

Hi all,

I’ve been declined during the JET application process and have been wallowing about it for almost a month now but am wondering if anyone has any advice on what options I may have now to get a position in Japan.

Living in Japan has always been a dream of mine and was hoping to fulfill this just after finishing my bachelor’s degree but since the pandemic hit I was unable to do it sooner.

I’m from Australia and I’ve recently started an international TESOL certificate with TESOL Australia and have been learning a lot about teaching. I have a Masters’s degree in Dietetics which I completed part way through 2022 and a Bachelors of Health Sciences (Nutrition major) from the University of Queensland completed in 2020. I have 3 months of work experience a consultant dietitian in aged care in Sydney and have had on-and-off volunteering positions with OzHarvest providing nutrition education and cooking demonstrations. I also have a relative who works in Japan as a doctor, not sure if this would also help my case.

Unfortunately, I realised I just had no passion for my career path and was trying to get into teaching in Japan as it seemed I already had translatable skills (providing group and individual-based education and education sessions), and would be incredibly rewarding to do.

I understand there are still programs outside of JET but have heard some horror stories of exploitative companies, and talks about difficulties finding places to live as most Japanese people won’t rent out to foreigners and the lengthy painful visa process.

If anyone has any thoughts I what steps I could take from here, I’d appreciate it immensely.
