Perception of gaming as adults in Japan

So the older I’m getting, the more weird stares or negative opinions I feel like getting for still enjoying video games. And more specifically on my PS5 and Switch. Ever since I got a Switch from my boyfriend in November 2022 I’ve been in love with it since I can take it with me on my way to work or feel more social by sitting in the same room with him whilst gaming. Playstation requires me to go huddle in the guest room and focus a bit more.

But I feel, being 32 now that I get a lot of annoying comments. Or the fun ‘have fun til it lasts you can forget about that once you have a kid’. Or the traditional ‘aren’t you too old to be still playing video games’ whilst I know this lady or guy just spent 5 hours last weekend binge watching some show.

My boyfriend is Norwegian, but second generation. His parents are from Shanghai. And he said on a flight back from Shanghai not long ago that there were some guys are age on the plane playing on a Switch. He mentioned he wasn’t a big gamer but that I was and they thought that was not that uncommon, at least for them in their culture and that made me wonder how Japanese perceive adults who still enjoy a game now and then in their busy lives. They are notoriously busy, as I have some Japanese friends who seem to live at their office.

How is the gaming culture in Japan? Especially since both Sony and Nintendo are Japanese established power houses.

Just a random thought one has on a sunny afternoon whilst listening to a Zoom meeting at work.
