I am considering moving to Japan during my gap year between college and med school. My godfather, who is like a parental figure, is Japanese and has family in Japan that I have visited multiple times. I was wondering if it was possible for my godfather’s relatives to be my guarantor for me to live there longer than a few months during this time?
I am a US citizen. I still don’t know what I’d do in Japan during this time but I know I want to work towards language fluency. Am I allowed to go by having guarantors and essentially not be productive to society? It would be cool to get a part time job or something but my language level would probably not be good enough for that.
Also, his family is retired, at least the people I would ask to be my guarantor. I read somewhere that they ask for an occupation. I could possibly ask younger relatives as well, though.
