Updates Re MEXT New Hopes for “English Expressions” to “Expressions and Logic”

Query for the experienced.

About a year or so ago, MEXT had an announcement on the educational updates. Related to English, I recall they mentioned they want to move from a scheme of “make the students sound like native speakers” (which they never did with any success anyway…) to a more logical scheme of increasing communication skills for real-world application. Theretically, less focus on drilling vocab and stress and heavy grammar, to topic, substance, overall understandable speaking.

MEXT had a press conference or speech on that, plus released a paper on it.

There was also mention of how the role of ALTs would change or adjust.

Might anyone here have links to any of that? The MEXT speech on educational changes / The document about educational changes / information on ALT adjustments?

Many thanks for any guidance.

  1. I heard MEXT said they want to slowly phase out ALTs and replace with online Apps

  2. MEXT says a lot of things. Often completely irrelevant to what’s going on on the actual ground.

  3. The ALT adjustment is so that we don’t lead the lessons ourselves (that may not be anything new at a lot of JHS already), but that we become assistants who set the context of the lessons provide content to students through feedback on their interactions. The feedback portion is the key part. You need to pick out certain parts of a particular interaction between students, tell them why it’s good and show them how they can go further/deeper utilizing the target language of the lesson without going into all the grammatical stuff.
