So we’re trying to work out the best option for fitting in some rural wandering after more than a week in Tokyo. We’ll be in-country most of mid-November and this is our second trip to Japan. We will not have a car, and we’re looking forward to the challenge of getting someplace more rural via transit, but within reason.
We’ve been looking at the Takayama area (broad, I know) hoping to fit in the following:
* visiting the historic villages
* moderate hikes (3-6 miles, but no wild elevation or mountaineering)
* onsen soaks (huge bonus points for a hike-in onsen)
* staying someplace with big traditional vibes.
We were looking at basing in Nanto, staying on site at a temple and taking a day trip down to Ainokura, but for good hikes I’m coming up empty unless we want to travel 3+ hours by multiple trains and the onsen in the area seem OK, if not stellar.
I’m wondering if there’s someplace we’d be better off basing while still being able to hit some of the traditional villages, but with better hiking and onsen options?
Thoughts?
