First time in Okinawa – where to stay

First time to Japan. Spending 3 nights in Okinawa in July and would like recommendations on where to stay. We don‘t plan on having a car and would rely on taxis or public transportation. From my limited research, we would like to spend time on the beach, scuba dive, visit American Village, Kokusai Dori, and maybe the caves. Any recommendations for areas/hotels would be greatly appreciated as well as any other “must-see”. Thank in advance!

  1. I have sorted out 3 nights at Onna beach resort (to cover the middle and aquarium route) and 4 nights at Kokusai dori street

  2. Oki is difficult without a car, but you should stay in Naha and visit kokusai, and move to American village, they have some beautiful beaches nearby, but all very touristy.

Scuba diving will pick you up at the hotel, most shops do, check our “aloha divers” “all blue divers” “English empire divers” most are on fb, aloha on ig.

If you stay in onna Beach like the other comment suggested you are pretty much locked there without a vehicle.
It’s beautiful but far from everything.
But I have to agree, if I had only 3 days I’d skip the American Village ( tourist trap in my opinion) and go to onna

  3. Rent a car and stay in Onna if you want to enjoy the natural beauty of the island.

Naha is well…. A regular somewhat dilapidated Japanese city. Infested with pachinko parlors and other Inaka items

  4. I am doing a similar trip like this too. (no car, taxi only, 3-4 days)

I was going to rent a car but fell into the rabbit hole (trap for myself)of doing too much research. Decided I just wanted peace of mind & went with the taxi option. :’)

  5. We just stayed at Hotel Collective right on the main strip in Naha and loved it. Beautiful hotel. Also we found amazing tacos and food at a place called “Drunk Tacos” nearby.
