Back in the day I remember seeing job ads from GABA in Tokyo Classified (now Metropolis) offering a cheap black suit to instructors as a ‘perk’. From what I remember all instructors had to wear these creations. As instructors only had one suit, I guess getting them cleaned was a major headache and some instructors smelled like Kobe docks in summer.
