Refining my itinerary – Please help!

Hi all,

I’ve put together an itinerary for a 16 day Japan trip with 2 kids (9 & 12) but I’m trying to decide on a couple of things that could do with some input from you all! So… here are some questions:

– Would a day trip from Osaka to Himeji castle to Hiroshima peace park and back to Osaka be doable?

– Would missing Miyajima Island or Himeji altogether be a poor decision?

– I have us with one full day in Kanazawa, and then the next day in Takayama, and then to Tokyo. Would it be better to do 2 days in one of those and miss the other?

– Nara… to go or not to go, that is the question.

– Currently we are visiting Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, Kanazawa, Takayama, Hakone, Tokyo. With some day trips around them. Am I missing a key place to visit?

Other than that, I think the rest of the trip is pretty well locked in, but these decisions will help with timing and transport between cities.

Thanks in advance!

  1. It takes about 2 hours from Osaka to Hiroshima by Shinkansen. However, if you go to Hiroshima, I would like you to visit Miyajima as well. If you have children, I would like you to stay overnight in Hiroshima and enjoy sightseeing in Hiroshima and Miyajima at your own pace. Be sure to see the deer in Nara Park.

  2. Don’t pack that schedule too full. Every day is an adventure, every shop, every street, every vending machine, every meal. Don’t worry about missing things. There isn’t much difference between castles. Temples start looking alike. Go to a baseball game in Hiroshima – tickets are cash only and the merch is great! Walk the shopping arcades in the various cities and have plenty of yen for the capsule machines. Don’t let anyone get overtired – you know where that leads. Just try to relax.
