I'm from Canada and looking for some gifts for my friend's new baby back home. He's about 8 months old, are there any good shops I should check out? I'm stopping in Tokyo next for a week as well, any suggestions there would be welcome as well.

Nishimatsuya aka the bunny store is pretty much the place for babies/kids clothes and stuff. It’s a chain so plenty of locations. Jinbei would probably be good.
Other chains like Uniqlo and Babies R Us have baby stuff too.
ToysRus also has kids and babies stuff.
