Still possible to watch sumo practice in Tokyo?

Good evening, I’m in tokyo.

I have heard one of the cool things to do in Tokyo is to attend a sumo wrestling practice very early in the morning. I would like to do this, however right now it appears that most of Japan is on holiday. Also there is not a tournament going on, the tournament is next month in january.

I do not have anyone to ask this question who may be completely knowledgeable about this. But does anybody know if sumo practices are still allowing people to attend them? I don’t know if the sumo wrestlers are on holiday or something.

  1. With covid, it is unlikely that they would let people go inside any of their building. Cannot tell if they practice during the holiday, but if there is a tournament in January, I would guess they want to train.

Thing is, you do not have to enter the building to see them practice, here is an example of a place where you can see them practice from outside and the video was done during covid : https://youtu.be/5mUl3ztJj54?t=3606
