I received a payment schedule from my ward in Tokyo for a “Forest Environmental Tax”. The schedule is 4 payments for a total of about 5% of last year’s gross income. I am lucky enough to have no issues paying this but I imagine that for some this can be quite a lot to suddenly fit into the budget. To be clear, I have no problem paying a tax that will fund GHG emissions reduction.
I looked it up, in English, and found the below link which says the tax was originally 1,000 per year per person.

So I was wondering if anyone knew more about this tax and how it is calculated.
