Expiring Zairyu card and JP bank account

So my Zairyu card will expire this weekend and if i can't renew it my JP bank account may be frozen. I actually already submitted for extension last month, but the process is taking much longer than i anticipated.

I went to the teller and they said that the account can be reactivated again the after my Zairu card was renewed, but still i'm very worried because there is almost 5 million yen in it.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Will my money be safe and not seized by the bank/government or something?

  1. Money is still yours don’t worry. Just go back there once you have your new card and it will be back same as before

  2. I don’t know what happens with other banks but when Shinsei told me my account would be frozen the day my residence card expires I had to explain that the immigration system in Japan gives you 2 months to wait for the new card beyond the expiration date stated (given you have applied for an extension and have the stamp to prove it). That allowed me to submit a form in writing asking them to allow me to keep my account active during this time.

  3. Are you beyond the 2 months grace period? Your residence card is still valid for up to 2 months after expiration while the extension is underway. Just submit it to your bank and show them the Stam on the back.

  4. JP accounts depend on which one you have. Not all accounts are reliant on the Residence cards validation (from what they told me.) Also, your JP account won’t free this weekend if your Zairyu card expires as you’ll have the 2 month extension from the date of expiration (which there should be a stamp on your card and you should have a receipt for) so go back and show them the receipt and the stamp and tell them they’re government approved extensions which they lawfully have to abide by. If you applied last month then you still have 2 months… 👀

  5. As far as I know based on my experience, the bank never freezed my bank account. I can still received my salary, using ATM card as usual and paying everything with the card. And when I left for holiday, and stranded in my home country for 2,5 years, they did nothing as well. Because when I returned to Japan, and would like to open a new one, they said that because I never closed the account, I just need to renew it. With new bank book and new ATM card.

But, I was wondering as well because lots of people here, that they used immigration lawyer to renew their residence card. I never used one, as the renewal process is never a hassle for me. Or is it because I have different visa? As information, my visa is Ginou, or Skilled Labor.
