Shinkansen Tickets at Vending Machine without IC Card?

Hi folks, I just arrived in Tokyo and figured I'd skip the long line at the JR counter in Shinagawa when buying my Shinkansen tickets to Kyoto by using a vending machine. However, both machines I tried to use seemed to require me to scan an IC card before gettinf very far in the purchasing process, and I don't have one. Ended up standing in line for the counter after all :/

Does anyone know if there is a button or way to skip the requirement for scanning an IC card to buy Shinkansen tickets at a vending machine? I couldn't find such an option. I was trying to use the first option on-screen, something like Base Fare + Reserved Seat option, maybe that's the wrong choice? I don't remember needing to scan one last year when I went from Tokyo to Osaka. I can't seem to find any info online from JR on how to use the machines.

Thanks!
