  1. [Nerd Nite Tokyo](https://tokyo.nerdnite.com/) is this Friday, June 21! (It’s actually across the river in Kawasaki).

    > Every month, we gather some smart speakers and a curious crowd, add a bar, and create something unique. This month, we’ll be talking about AI in language education and the science of marathon running!
    >
    > First, John M. Gayed will discuss how he has adapted the English writing program at Waseda University to meet the challenges posed by generative AI systems like ChatGPT. Then, body hacker and longevity researcher Crissman Loomis talks about his experience using the latest research to train for his first marathon.
    >
    > Drinks (both alcoholic and non) will be available. Drink, meet, and be square-y! Kids are also welcome at Nerd Nite.

  2. Live music this week! Only a couple of recommendations this time, although I have loads for next week.

**Thursday 20th June** Shibuya TOKIO TOKYO enters a new season of its ‘FREE!!!’ events, where entrance is free when you buy two drinks (Â¥600×2). This time it’s a city pop special, with three contemporary acts with distinctly retro J-pop vibes: [https://www.instagram.com/p/C7oV3CGyu9t/](https://www.instagram.com/p/C7oV3CGyu9t/)

**Sunday 23rd June** Alternative two-piece Nikoã‚“ (Nikon) has cut through the indie crowd by doing things like no one else. Their debut album *public melodies* released in May to massively positive reception, but you won’t find it on streaming as it’s only available as [a free/pay what you want download](https://niko-n.jimdofree.com/discography/). The quality of their music and their wide connections has meant their events have been supported by big names, far beyond what you’d expect from a tiny indie band. They are currently on a release tour, which continues this Sunday at Shimokitazawa SPREAD: [https://www.instagram.com/p/C7v2txCyg_o/](https://www.instagram.com/p/C7v2txCyg_o/)

If you’re looking to check out the scene and these dates don’t fit you, I have [a guide on how indie music here works](https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravel/comments/14sum76/how_to_access_live_music_in_japan_and_why_it/), and [a list of venues you should know](https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravel/comments/1d5jcgl/the_tokyo_music_venues_everyone_should_know/).

Hey guys! A pretty cool dark techno DJ from Berlin, Nurse3D, will be in Tokyo and playing three shows. Two are here: Thur. 6/20 [Ruby Room](https://www.instagram.com/rubyroomtokyo?igsh=MXY1YTZjZWt0cG5jeg==) Shibuya Free Entrance! Sat. 6/22 [7th Floor](https://www.instagram.com/7thfloornanakai?igsh=MW1vYW9xb2ZnMmJxdw==) Shibuya ¥1500 incl. 1 drink

Normally every Thursday is free at Ruby Room with great stuff from Tokyo but also many acts on tour from abroad (sometimes exclusively). However this Thursday 6/20 black metal band Spectral Wound and others are playing (only two shows in Tokyo!) and there is an entrance charge only in the evening this time (different organizer): [Spectral Wound Tickets](https://tiget.net/events/317308)

But from 23:00 there is no entrance charge and Nurse3D will play with resident Sojourna. And again they will play with other popular Tokyo techno DJs at 7th Floor on Sat. 6/22. It’s a full moon on the summer solstice! If you haven’t been to 7th Floor, there is a nice balcony overlooking Shibuya.
