Part 3: Nova 1996 Revisited – The Student Edition

Most of the students at Nova were pretty good and as was common at that time the instructors at the branches that I worked at often socialized with select groups. But there were a fair few nut jobs or eccentric students too, who we avoided like the plague. Here are just a few.

Japan Times Guy: This guy was an eternal 7C student but in every lesson, he used to neatly place a copy of that day's Japan Times at the edge of the table.

Loose Shorts Guy: In summer you had to strategically place yourself in the Voice Room to avoid seeing his junk.

Mental Patients: There was a wave of students with mental issues after some expert said that they would benefit from studying English for some reason. Most of them weren't too bad in the scheme of things. But one particular student who had an information session with Nova staff was banned from Nova before he even started. According to the staff, he was dribbling on the table and touching his private parts during the session. The staff member then asked the instructors in the staff room if it would be OK if he signed up. Obviously, everyone said, 'No way!' so he never had any lessons.

Scabby Gabby: This rotund lady left a pile of scabs on the floor of the Voice Room after scratching scabs on her bare legs.

The Licker: This young lady had a sexy way of licking her lips. She was also dating one of the instructors unbeknown to all other the guys who worked there. As you can imagine the guy who was dating her, had to listen to pretty crude 'banter' about his secret girlfriend.

The Werewolf Guy: This guy physically resembled and sounded like a werewolf. Spooky!

Video Fan: This 60-year-old 7C guy would introduce himself by saying his hobby was 'adult video watching.' He only did it if the instructor was female and/or there were young female students in the lesson. Eventually, the staff spoke to him and he thankfully disappeared.
