7* Day Itinerary Check: Solo Traveler in Tokyo – September

I arrive at NRT Aug 31st at noon and leave from NRT Sep 14th afternoon. I'm planning to see Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, with a day trip to Hiroshima. This is my draft Tokyo itinerary for about 7 days, hence the asterisks. I haven't really done enough planning for Kyoto and Osaka to ask for a review on those 🙂

About me:

  • Coming from a ~19 hour journey from Toronto, Canada
  • Solo traveler, very comfortable walking 20-25k+ steps/day consistently for two weeks
  • I enjoy being in moderate crowds and don't mind heavy ones
  • Interested in: art, history, tech (especially trains), city exploration, kpop
  • Not interested in: retro gaming, anime, manga, disney

General notes:

  • Any evening/night that I still have energy and time, I will spend checking out the nightlife around Shinjuku (Ni-Chome in particular). I'm not into dancing/clubbing but always ready to enjoy a nice bar
  • I will have a half day in Tokyo the day before I leave. I am keeping that free for adjustments/additions during the trip

Saturday Aug 31st

  • Arrive at NRT around noon
  • Get to my hotel: JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku by around 2-3PM
  • Shibuya: walk through the scramble and maybe some light shopping
  • Go to the observation deck at Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
  • Crash

Sunday Sep 1st

  • I'm assuming I will wake up relatively early and tire easily due to jet lag

    • Senso-ji Temple and Asakusa Shrine
    • Nakamise-dori Street
    • Walk along Sumida Park
    • Get close enough to the SkyTree for some pictures

    • Hit up Itoya and uniqlo/muji

  • Zojo-ji Temple
  • Tokyo Tower (go to the observation deck)
  • Teamlab Borderless

Tuesday Sep 3rd

  • Urban exploration day
  • Start at Shibuya, walk around and generally north to Harajuku, hitting all the must-sees
  • Double back and catch the sunset at the top of Shibuya Sky (will book as the tickets are released)
  • Walk around Shinjuku

Wednesday Sep 4th

  • Ueno
    • Tokyo National Museum
    • National Museum of Western Art
  • Odaiba
    • Cross the rainbow bridge on the Yurikamome line, see the life-sized Gundam
    • Teamlab Planets

Thursday Sep 5th

  • National Art Centre
  • Tokyo Metro Museum
  • (time permitting) a bit of window shopping at Akihabara
  • Go to Shin-Okubo for Kpop merch and albums

Friday Sep 6th

  • Marunouchi Square
  • Get lost in Tokyo station
  • Take the train to Osaka around midday

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

  1. Am I missing any obvious things/places?
  2. Do I have too little planned in any of the days? I'm a bit worried about Sep 1st
  3. Any recommendations for nice bars or arcades around Shinjuku station?
  4. Any recommendations for good stores for Kpop merch specifically? I have a list of places for albums but I'd love to pick up some merch without paying for international shipping
