research student vs language training

I want to do my Master in Japan, I was thinking of enrolling as a research student first and then apply for Masters. During my time as research student, I could learn the language and settle. Since I need to learn the language, wouldn’t it be better to not apply for research student and simply go to a language school. This way, I won’t have to pay enrollment fees and tuition of university + language school. Then, apply straight to Masters. What would be the advantage of being a research student before applying to Master? Thank you.
