3rd trip to Japan coming up and this time I’m taking my parents on their first trip. After suggestions for areas to consider staying in, outside the areas I’m familiar with. Budget and accessibility constraints.

Mods, please let me know if this question is too general. I’ve done some research but would love to tap into the collective wisdom of this group.

My parents are in their 70’s and have only traveled overseas once before to New Zealand (we’re Australian). Mum can’t walk long distances. She can walk enough to explore places, but I want to minimise any unnecessary walking distances wherever possible.

We are hoping to get a 2 bedroom apartment, airbnb or hotel, outside of the popular areas. I’ve always stayed in Shinjuku or Shibuya but to keep costs down I am thinking about staying a lot further out. Ideally it would be near a convenient station to get around, but I’m open to getting us a taxi to get to the station each day.

Can anyone suggest a suitable area? I was thinking maybe Shinagawa or north of Ueno somewhere? And if anyone has been to Japan with elderly family members I’d love to hear how it went! This trip is all about them and I want to cater to them as best I can.

Thank you! 🙏
