  1. Probably not. If you look at interviews with randoms on the street on YouTube channels like That Japanese Man Yuta, you find that anime is pretty niche in Japan, and lots of Japanese are surprised that it’s popular overseas haha

  2. They do, but they turn a blind eye because weebs work for much less than non weebs in Japan as long as the anime fantasy keeps them going.

  3. Nobody I have met in Japan knows what a weeb is. I suspect because it is a term in the English speaking anime sphere and most Japanese people are not good at English.

  4. I’m Japanese, no they don’t what “weeb” means but it is practically same as “otaku” which is a common word. Weeb is just another form of otaku. Japanese people do recognize that they’re foreign okaku everywhere in the world.

  5. Simply happy to hear they love our culture. In reality, there are a lot of inhuman downsides in our society, and I really hate them, but they won’t matter at all to anyone as long as he/she stays outside of Japan.

So just have fun. But, if ever you would have a chance to stay like months in Japan, and get a hint of hidden aspects of the society, plz leave some criticism. That would be of some help for it to keep going in a healthier way, to create some more high-quality manga/anime.

  6. *Weeb* in any case is a pejorative term used by people to box others into an easily definable category. It’s like asking “Do Americans know what *yariman* means?”

Not all people interested in Japanese culture are the same. I’d even go as far as saying not all people who like Japanese *anime* are the same, and some who do would probably disassociate themselves from the popular stereotype.

Your definition of *weeb* seems to be “non-Japanese people obsessed with Japanese culture or their idea of it.” What does “obsessed” mean here? Interested in? A person who owns a few *manga* and a kimono? Dudes who buy wall-hanger katana and dress up as ninja for Halloween? People who go to sushi restaurants every week?

*Weeb* is a word I’ve only ever seen used as a dismissive insult. (Then again I live in Japan and only see the term thrown around online.)

  7. hello i’m Japanese and most people that are japanese don’t understand what a weeb is but the way i know it as is someone who fetishizes japan and japanese culture since that’s it’s original meaning !! it’s not talked about in japan as much as it is in the west or anything like that.
