Landlord wants me to pay for electricity AFTER I moved out.

I moved out from an apartment a few months ago. I paid the cleaning fee, and the last utility bills. Only to be told – sikes – it’s not the last one because it wasn’t cancelled until 2 weeks after I moved out, and apparently, the landlord used the electricity before cancelling it for me. I was never made aware that I had to pay this as part of the cleaning fee.

Is this normal in Japan lol?

  1. You’re responsible for canceling when you move out. I assume you signed up in your own name? It has nothing to do with the landlord in that case. Your contract is with the energy company.

  2. How much is it? In my experience, I’ve always canceled electric and gas on my own with the separate company.

  3. Your last bill would come after you moved out even if the landlord didn’t use it for cleaning.

Let’s say you moved into your apartment on January first, and your billing date is the 20th every month. Your January bill for January 1st to 20th comes in in February, your February bill comes in March. If you moved out on August 31st, your last bill from Aug. 21st to 31st would come in September.
