Home staying in Japan (How bad is the commute?)

Hey everyone,

I’m home staying in Tokyo for a year while I study at Sophia University and wanted to hear about your experiences. What I am most concerned about is the commute. Has anyone home stayed and can tell me their commute? I know it varies a ton person to person but I just want a reference and a way to manage expectations. Also, was your family centrally located? I am just asking for your personal experience, I know it varies

Another concern I have about the home stay is that it will be restrictive. Did your hosts give you a curfew or manage your movements? I am 20 and plan to go out in Tokyo. If you did that, is that something that bothered your family? Obviously when going out or doing anything I would be respectful of their space.
