Beginner Level Kanji

Learning Japanese from the point of view of a native English speaker is already difficult enough, but kanji is somewhat other worldly to me so far. Who has amazing recommendations for resources for starting out and not getting too overwhelmed?

  1. Basic Kanji 500 is my go to recommendation, primarily because it’s a good introduction to writing.

Otherwise, most places are going to be the same. You’re going to learn 木、日、一、二、三 first, and then work up from there. It matters much less what you use, more that you just get started.

  2. What helps me greatly is looking up the history of each hieroglyph, how it’s constructed and what are (or were) the meanings of each element. It adds logic to the symbols.

  3. I enjoy wanikani personally. It is paid, but the first 4 levels are free so you can try it to see if it’s worth your time or money. It does a decent job at teaching things at a relative slower pace, but you can introduce more vocab to your review pile per session if you wanted to go a bit faster, basically all it teaches is kanji and vocabulary using the kanji it teaches, though. So if you’re looking for anything besides that it won’t be the best.
