Advice on how to work for foreign clients through an intermediary Japanese company(to maintain visa)

As the title says, I'm looking for advice on how I might be able to work for a foreign client through a Japanese company, and they really just need to be there to sponsor the visa.

I've worked in software development here in Japan for 6 years, but the salaries are consistently 3x as much in the US as here for equivalent career progression at any point (often with less work/expectations too).

Does anyone know of any companies that specialize in this?
Should I ask a approach a business I already have relations with to be the intermediary of a contract I secure?
Should I start my own company and sponsor myself with a business manager visa?
Should I work a smaller contract in Japan for sponsorship and do projects directly with companies as a US citizen? (Paid in USD with split US/Japan earning taxes, not sure how the finer details work there.)
Is there a visa now or in the works for an individual earning foreign income to live in Japan? \or, speaking cynically, does the government just want foreigners to be trapped as wage slaves at Japanese companies?])
