Tips for surviving rush hour from Miura peninsula?

As the title says, I’ll be commuting to Shibuya pretty soon for a little while and I’m near Yokosuka, and I’ll be taking Keikyu to Yamanote. I’ve been fortunate enough not to experience rush hour on the trains very much and I was thinking of going in early to avoid the biggest crush. If anyone knows how bad the Keikyu line gets at what times, it would be greatly appreciated, or any tips on how to get a seat (if it’s even possible).

  1. Honestly by the time it gets to Yokosuka it’s going to be full. We live in Miura Kaigan and my wife sometimes struggles to find a seat. Rarely but it happens. Once it gets to kurihama it’s packed apparently.

  2. Keikyu operates a reserved train during peak hours (AM into Tokyo / PM out of Tokyo) called Wing. Perhaps look into that? Not sure if it guarantees a seat, but it would be a lot less crowded.

  3. I’d recommend avoiding KQ and just take the JR Yokosuka Line, using the Green Car. Yeah, it’s twice as much — but you’ve got a reclining seat, with a tray. Kurihama is the southern terminus so getting a seat would be virtually guaranteed on the way up. For the return trip, esp. during rush hour, you’d probably be best-off taking the Yamanote from Shibuya all the way to Tokyo Station (northern terminus).

In addition to being more expensive, this would take significantly more time (KQ expresses definitely are faster), but for me, the comfort (and non-crowdedness) of the Green Car is worth the extra cost. But then, I’m an occasional commuter — I can see how this would add up if used daily. Maybe use as an occasional “treat” a couple times per week?
